British Columbia Records

There are numerous wonderful sources for family history searchers in British Columbia. We have started with government sources, including archives, courts, wills registry, and coroners’ reports, and then moved on to many other interesting collections. We have checked the large, commercial websites to see what they have to offer and also managed to find some lesser-known gems for you to view.

1. BC Provincial Archives

As you go through the materials available at the BC Provincial Archives at search-bcarchives.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca, take a minute to look at the British Columbia Archives Research Guide to Probate Case Files, which you can see here: royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/assets/wills_guide2010.pdf. This research guide is worth a read if you are having trouble finding a BC probate file because it has some great search tips and explains how to locate items on microfilm.

The relevant databases at the archives are as follows:

• Estates probated in Victoria 1859–1992

• Estates probated in Vancouver 1893–1992

• Probate files outside Victoria and Vancouver

• Succession duty and probate registers

• Succession duty and probate fees index cards

These are all indexes to files that are kept on microfilm at the archives. If you go to the archives in person, you can take your own pictures of the files or you can ask the staff at the archives to make copies for you. Alternatively, once you have located the file in an index, write down the location and file number, and ask the archive staff by email, phone, or fax to make a copy of it for you (there is a small photocopy fee).
